Khone Falls

Once we paddle to the Mekong, we will then take a bus or motor boat north to the boarder with Laos.
Just over the boarder on the Mekong in Laos, is Khone falls, which also happens to be the widest
waterfall in the world. Getting over the boarder is easy if we just want to see the waterfalls so we will
either paddle up to the falls or take a tour boat to see them. According to the World Waterfall Database,
“Khone Falls is a series of falls and rapids where the Mekong River splits into seven large
channels, as well as hundreds of smaller ones, and cascades 69 feet over a series of falls
and rapids that when measured from one edge to the other stretch 10 kilometers in width,
making it the widest waterfall on the planet.” These falls are the primary reason that the
Mekong River is not navigable further north from the sea to China, though a railroad was
built and used for a short time to get around it.
